who would your parents have chosen for you?

July 4, 2008 / by 24-7

i think mine would have chosen lora because our families are close. but i don't really know what would go through their decision process. what do parents look at that the kids don't?

i'm thinking of a creative way to ask my mom who she thinks she and dad would have chosen. dad's passed on so no chance of really knowing the answer. i have a good idea what girl they really liked that i dated because my sister told me so. but we had religious differences and i would have been miserable. or maybe she would have been.....

this is a rarely used process in this country. maybe it's time we adopt it? might it lesson the probability of this crapshoot in which we are enmeshed?

I think the best thing about arranged marriages would be blaming someone else when the marriage fails......

    How's the road trip going?

true.  i wonder if that reason is used where the practice is used?

    road trip?

Hmm... interesting question, I'm not really sure.  My parents really liked my wife up until they found out what I found out.  But my parents have never really liked any of my girlfriends.  I tend to go for the tattooed and pierced girls that freak out parents.  Especially, my straight laced folks.  I think they'd like me to bring home something a little more Sweet and wholesome

the part of me that's nonconformist applauds you for freaking out your parents.   i never did that.  might have been fun and i'm sure their response to the wholesome girls i did present to them would have received even better welcomes.  it sounds like you'd go kicking and screaming into an arranged marriage..... more than me that's for sure.

I guess if they had to choose they would have picked a MAN....however they LOVE Maria very much and have welcomed her into the family with wide open arms!!

that would really throw a wrench in tradition and i bet you have much empathy for those caught in such tradition.  it's wonderful that your family is so accepting.  some friends of mine's parents always accepted the other but open discussion or acceptance was never to be.  i know at some level it hurts my friends.

hmmm, I have a general idea of who my parents would pick.  I would trust them to a point but who can tell whether or not you could learn to love the person or that the marriage would be a happy one?

i think that is a big question of any method and but more obvious in an arranged relationship.

Mine would have chosen for me to be straight...looks like I followed my own beat and chose what made me happy instead of what they wanted for my life.....

perhaps the homophobic's worst act is alienating his/her child

  • aj8472 said 1 months ago

that is very true, thats why we don't see each other very much...

I'm just now reading this... I'm so behind.  Good thought provoking question.  I don't think my parents would have chosen my husband but he was the best out of all the other long haired, hippy , punks or black guys that I brought home  My parents were thrilled I was finally starting to conform a little!  I don't think any parent will ever like who their child brings home.  Expectations are high and parents won't ever think the spouse will be good enough.  Damned if you do or don't so make a choice and ride it out... and make the best of it!
